Fees, Motions, Meetings and Voting

I believe lots of good things are happening in Sun City although, I must admit, I’m not happy with the number of Members that showed up for the Candidate Forums or the last BoardMeeting!

Let’s forget about that for now and concentrate on the good.

This Autumn Get Educated, Communicate Your Thoughts and Participate in Elections and Meetings

Democracy is messy

I think it's safe to say, the Sun City Advocates are excited as we come to the end of the first year where self-governance was restored to our community. We won't bore you with the details of how and why we fell so far from our tenets and values; all that matters is we are on our way back. In a bit of honest reflection; I

Fall Clean-Up: Issues requiring attention by the Board

Budget and Finance:

If you have not attended a Budget and Finance Committee meeting or the Special Session at Mountain View in August you are most likely clueless on where the RCSC is financially.
  • No, we are not broke
  • We are however trapped in a malaise of playing catch-up for past sins

Board and Community Priorities as We Get Back to Work this Fall

It takes a village to run the village

All's been quiet on the Western Front, or at least it seemed that way. Truth is, there were many things going on all Summer that involved the Board of Directors and the many members of the community who dedicated their time and efforts to the various committees, such as the Finance & Budget Committee and the

Board Meetings are on a 2-Month Hiatus Now But Work Continues

Happy 4th of July To Our Advocate Family!

By the Numbers - Asserting our Rights

By now I suspect most of you have watched or heard about the membership quorum vote at the RCSC board meeting last Thursday. To be clear, it was only the first reading with the second one coming in September whereby all measures it should pass; we'll see before we start celebrating.

Seemingly No End to the Very Busy and Productive Work for Sun City and Sun Citians

With each passing day, I find myself less inclined to post my thoughts. That's a really good thing as it means with each passing day, the new RCSC board of directors is headed in the right direction. What's even more curious is, in spite of the sea-change by them, there are more pressing agenda items now than at any time in our recent past. Here's just a quick snapshot of what is going on; hopefully you are paying attention.

A Day Late...

The dawn of directors supporting membership

Actually, this blog posting is several days behind our normal schedule, but you know the old adage, "if you don't have something good to say, don't say anything." Sitting in attendance at the first board meeting, I was excited by the prospect of the dawn of a new day. The Sun City Advocates worked hard to elect candidates who understood the importance of listening to the membership. Steve Collins, John Fast, and Jean Totten all campaigned on that premise/promise.

Off to a Great Start!

Refreshing Repartee

The new RCSC board of directors got off to a great start with a uniquely improved attitude towards the membership. Refreshing not to feel the disdain from the front of the room or the condescending attitude shown on all too many occasions when members raised issues they didn't like or want to hear. Yesterday, everyone was allowed to speak freely and bluntly without the normal pushback. Rumor has it,

A Member's Mandate:

Almost anyone reading knows the history of the Sun City Advocates. We began in the fall of 2021 following the firing of Karen McAdam as an RCSC board member. There were 10 of us who started out and it should come as no surprise we had challenging arguments over the direction and what we should be doing as a group. Strongly opinionated people often find it difficult to agree on even the smallest of issues.

Will the RCSC be closing down on January 1st?

"In my opinion, I would have to close down!"

We kid you not, at the November 17 board meeting this statement was made by the RCSC General Manager. There was a spirited debate regarding the $29 lot assessment increase buried in the acceptance of the RCSC budget for 2023. They tried to pass it at the October meeting and it was voted down, because there was some concern, or was it confusion? In either case, it failed. They brought it back up at the November meeting and once again on the agenda, all it said was Unfinished Business: 1. Motion to Reconsider. No explanation, no nothing.

A Voice in the Wilderness

I guess it's just me that cares about Robert's Rules of Order, and I think that opinion will be validated by the lack of comments/replies this thread will receive!

When I read the article in the Independent today (7.18) regarding "Pickleball at Lakeview" it just drove me crazy...again!

Regarding the article in the March 21st Independent, “RCSC meeting format changed.”

Unraveling a disaster

Where does one start to unravel the disaster of that Reconsidered motion? First of all, Director McAdam was correct that the motion to Reconsider was out of order because it was required to be reconsidered at the meeting in which it was presented (see RONR 37:10). Second, the monthly meetings are just that. Each one is a meeting and each one is considered a session because the entire order of

Do You Love Sun City? - One Man’s Opinion

A brief look back.

If I told you those buying in Sun City in the 60's and 70's were absolute zealots who loved Sun City, would you be surprised? My good friend Ben Roloff just told me about finding files at the Sun City Museum that documented the origins of building organizations from very early on in 1960.

Recap of RCSC Board Meeting 03.14.2022

 Caution: Confusion Zone Ahead

The short, one motion Amended Agenda posted for this board meeting was most welcome!

Maybe it would be adjourned before lunchtime. ( WRONG.)

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly - Part Two

Too much cash is not always a good thing

One of the biggest challenges over the years has been for board members and RCSC management to overcome the idea that we are a not-for-profit organization. Most often those hired and elected have come out of for-profit businesses. Two wholly different and complete animals. Some have done better than others. Some who have come out of education and others who have worked for non-profits more easily adapt to our environment. Others steeped in the secrecy of for-profit companies look at transparency with

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly - Part One

The Meeting Drama Continues

I suspect most of us, at least those who liked those Western movies, remember fondly the Clint Eastwood epic 3-part series (is that too strong a term?), A Fistful of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More and the best of the bunch, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Wikipedia called the three movies from the 60's Spaghetti Westerns and starred Eastwood and launched his career. Oddly enough I came across the final one on cable a month or so ago, and my memories of it were better than the movie was while watching again.

What hadn't changed was the haunting theme song

Two Steps Forward, Four Steps Back - Board Meeting Recap

RCSC Monday Morning Board Meeting

Once again, we saw an amazing turnout for the RCSC board meeting on February 14th, 2022. With well over 100 members in attendance, it is clear that those living here are again renewing their interest in the community we all love. In the not-so-distant past, you might have found 20 to 30 homeowners present at a meeting that lasted often an hour or less. These board meetings are clearly showing an uptick in interest on the part of the homeowner. We thank you!

The agenda contained a request from the Technology Committee, two second-readings on previous motions (Long Range Planning Committee-Analysis of

Accountability, Loyalty and Community Governance

Who is doing what?

The general manager has one employer; one entity he or she is accountable to. If the Directors of the Board – who were elected by us don't do their job -  we end up with one person doing whatever they want. This magnifies each year when the board members keep conducting business in the same manner. There was a reason they had term limits (1 three-year term), and there was a reason to allow a second. I'm not sure one was more beneficial than the other. I know in retrospect as openings occurred, bringing back retreads insured we continue down the same path. They simply refused to hold the general manager accountable. Frankly, I think that was why they brought former directors to close out the year.
