One Final Thought...(Checks and Balances from a Member Perspective)

Member / Board Exchange Recap - Part Five

Words Matter

Yesterday was painful; perhaps for all of us. I was really hopeful the new board president meant what she said about having a Kumbaya moment. She seemed real, she seemed interested in us all working together. It's just been slow to germinate (I’m being really freaking kind here).

I listen intently, always have, always will. If you don't know by now, I subscribe to the adage; words matter.

When the president sits up front and says we know historically they needed to change things because a handful of members could have destroyed Sun City, she was patently wrong. It's why I confronted her on it.

Articles of Incorporation + Bylaws = Member Protection

Our documents provided safeguards from a handful of members affecting unwanted change. Any motions to community documents needed to be followed by subsequent action to make changes.

  • Articles of Incorporation; 30 days, by the members.
  • Bylaws; by either the board or the membership but again with caveats of timely filings.
  • Added to that is the game they are currently playing with motions that are made from the floor at membership meetings are referred back to the board.

Two statements to dispute

Yesterday when she claimed if people came in with 300 proxies it was going to destroy Sun City, it simply never happened. It's become the myth that just keeps on giving. What did happen was a lawsuit, which had nothing to do with what she was claiming yesterday, was the outcome.

The second one is more troubling. I heard it twice yesterday; once from the president and once from the general manager. It caused me to throw up in my mouth both times. They each had the audacity to mention the importance of "checks and balances." Blasphemy.

If I told you I have written how the RCSC has destroyed our documents by eliminating the "checks and balances" written into them one hundred times, it would be a gross understatement. It's been my mantra. There was a time when the membership had the ability to hold their elected leaders and subsequently the management team accountable for their actions
Not these days.

Sun City was built by and for the members

What you heard yesterday, and let me make this very clear, was an argument from both management and the president they wanted to maintain their right to do whatever they wanted, the membership be damned. Sun City was built by and for the members. DEVCO worked in concert with us, they helped us create the near-perfect structure, and piece by piece the past 15-plus years they've stripped us of our rights. Think not? Ask the golfers who can't get on the golf courses because we are selling those tee times to outsiders.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful insite and keeping those of us still working informed. I am 67 and my husband 72 work full time and thought we made a great decision moving to Sun City. It truly saddens me that is is money at all costs and the community is falling apart. I see it in my small 23 unit Condo Association. Can’t get board members to make decisions as we discuss the future needs. The working together for a common goal has gone away. Just like in the RCSC they let a few control the majority with decisions to make more money. It is great that there are funds but they need to keep our infrastructure in place and meeting the needs and desires of those living here calling Sun City home. Not how they can make more money by selling off portions to non residents that have no skin in the game. The Theater is a prime example of overspending and still not meeting the actual theater needs. Softball is well attended, fun watching these older guys staying young and the needs they have and how long they have waited for something that was approved yet ground not yet broken. Golf is another story and much has been discussed. Owners first is all I can say but it needs to be self sustaining. Don’t change rules to make Sun City something it was never intended to be. Sun City is for active seniors not for renters, underaged people. Call me grouchy in my old age but I like spending time with people my age and not all the young people I see everywhere here in Sun City. Maybe it is time to move but I love it here, I love my condo I just want it to be what it was intended to be and not all these crazy rule changes and putting money at the top of the list.

Thanks for your comments anonymous; it's certainly not time to move, it is time to get involved. Sun City is a great place to live, we can make it better come this next election. Watch and listen as we explain what we all can do to take ownership of the community we all love.
