Poll: We Need to Ask You Some Things...And We Need Your Answers...

By the people, for the people

Did you know that Sun City was built around a structure of asking members/residents what they wanted? John Meeker was brilliant and when he came to oversee the community in 1965, he had a number of aggressive ideas to help make that happen. As smart as he was, he understood that one day the Del E. Webb Corporation (DEVCO) would leave, and it would be up to those living here to ensure it survived. He instilled in the leadership and throughout their documents a belief that the answers would best be found by talking with, listening to, and working with the members. It became an integral component in the concept of self-governance.

The shift to corporate governance

Unfortunately, over the past 15 years, listening to the membership became less important to those elected to represent us. Worse yet, those hired to serve us drifted as well. The only reason that we - the Sun City Advocates even exist - is due to the fact board members felt they could do as they pleased. Let's be honest; that's yesterday's news. With the turning of the calendar page, 2022 has proven there may well be a return to the tenets and values that the community once had and what it was built around. When we started the Sun City Advocates, we always knew our primary objective was to listen to our members and pursue the path you felt most important. Hence, this brief survey to gather your thoughts.

Like last time, we will tabulate your votes and share your comments in a future blog post. We – the Sun City Advocate Panel - feel that it is important to create an interactive means of communication and believe it is important for the board to see that you are interested in your community. In the coming years, we want to continue to bring members back into the discussion about Sun City's future. While some may get discouraged, we know that to date, we have made positive strides.

Sun City is an incredible place to live, and we are convinced that with a little help from the membership, it will get even better. Who wouldn't want that?

I can help you draft better polls. Who should I contact?

Thanks for the offer Kim. As we chatted about this effort, it was more a test to see what type of response we could get. We are in the initial stages of working out the kinks on the site and would love Sun City residents and members of the Sun City Advocates to step up and help us. Sounds like you are interested and we would love all the help we can get. I know Jean will be reading this and we will be in touch to get you involved going forward. Thanks again, that is exactly how Sun City was built and why it succeeded.
